Our thoughts on Golden Retriever Breeding
We wish only to breed the best Golden Retrievers as
gundogs, for agility, Field Trials, tracking and as
a workingdog in general. In addition to that we
demand that our dogs can interact in an
ordinary
family environment.
The Golden Retriever is one of six retriever
species. A dog that is known to be an engaged and
keen working dog, of middle to large size, and with
a lovely (darkish) amber colour. A Golden Retriever
should show eagerness to work and cooperation
towards the handler.
The Golden Retriever was originally bred as a
gundog, but today you will find them used in various
ways both professionally as well as on a more
hobby-oriented level. As a gundog it is primarily
used as a retriever of upland game birds like
pheasant, pigeons or grouse, but with the use of a
small amount of training, you can even use a mature
Golden Retriever as a flushing dog. Because of the
calm temper and the ability as a fast learner the
Golden retriever has also been used, with excellent
results, as a search and rescue dog, blind-aid dog,
service dog for disabled people, narcotics dog, bomb
finding dog and many more functions.
Kennel Bredekaer
When we occasionally have a litter, we put a great
effort into socializing and positively influence
them before they are being sent out to their new
families. Bredekaer puppies will see a as much of
the surrounding world as possible, they will
presented to shots fired (from a appropriate
distance), they will be presented to gamebirds of
different species and they will be introduced to
colours, kitchen appliances, vacuum cleaners, loud
music, the television, other dogs, children and
adults, drives in cars, vets and all things we can
think of really, that builds up confidence in the
puppy. We will among other things use a CD with
noises produced especially for puppies, it contains
sound of thunder, fireworks, traffic, shots and
such. If the season is right we will bring the
puppies to the beach, into a nearby forest to
broaden their horizon. Together with the mother and
siblings, it is and easy and comfortable method of
introducing the puppies to the surrounding world and
socializing them at the same time.
As mentioned previously, we will present the dogs to
wild game from a young age, usually from they 4-5
weeks old, this will ease the work for the puppy
buyer, when trying to get the puppies attention to
wild game and such, this is of importance to the
buyer that wants his or her dog to be used as a
hunting dog, For the buyers that are not going to
use the dog for hunting and retrieving game, it has
no importance, if you do not continue to train them
using wild game.
Our puppies will be kept among the pack, not just
with its mom. Our knowledge tells us that, when a
puppy has been raised alongside the patriarch of the
pack, they will be more adaptable to the training
and to follow the leader (you) later in life. The
mother and the leader of the pack will create the
right foundation for good behaviour and interaction
within the pack.
Our puppies will be tested when 7 weeks of age the
test is neither a quality-insurance nor is it an
answer book.
We see the test as a guideline of how the puppy is
measured at the time of the test, which qualities it
possesses, but it also gives us some indications of
the abilities of the puppy in question, so that
we're able to give the 'gundog' to the hunter and
such. In all litters you will find puppies with the
quality of an excellent (active) family dog, and
these will of course be sent out to families that
are not interested in raising the next Field Trail
Champion. In all you can say that we prepare our
puppies to fit right into what is considered normal
family life.
Our breeding goals!
Our goal is to raise good, healthy and mentally
strong Golden Retrievers, with the main focus on
health, gundog abilities and the honour the looks
and characteristics of the breed.
A puppy raised by us, has ancestors that are
primarily Field Trialed and are used regularly for
hunting, this is your guarantee of getting a dog
with the right capabilities and instincts. All the
dogs we use for breeding have been thoroughly tested
and found free from HD on hips and elbows, and other
inherited deceases. We naturally aim for the highest
degree of healthiness but we also aim for raising
dogs with the temper and abilities that
characterizes the Golden Retriever.
It is our goal that a retriever from Kennel
Bredekaer should be ; highly trainable, Intelligent
and have a natural born desire to work and is
friendly, approachable and full of confidence. In
other words, you will have a sweet and trustworthy
friend for many years ahead. We put a lot of effort
into choosing the right combinations, and we
appreciate our puppy buyers to get the puppies
x-rayed on hips and elbows when time is due, not
only does this give the owner the state of hips and
elbows on the dogs but this also enables us to
constantly evaluate our success in breeding towards
our standards.
We are not a very productive kennel when it comes to
the amounts of litters that we make. The reason for
that is that we sometimes find it hard to find the
right people for puppies of pure gundog-lines. As a
rule of thumb we normally only breed a litter when
we need a puppy ourselves. We will recommend that if
you are interested in buying a puppy from us, you
should let us know even if we do not have any
announced, our occational litters are normally sold
out prior to birth. You are always welcome to contact us
by mail using this address: mail@bredekaer.dk
and maybe be included on the
waitinglist for upcomming litters.
Buying from us :
We have, as mentioned before, put a lot of effort in
breeding what we think is a real Golden Retriever.
This also means that we put a lot of effort into
choosing the right buyers of our puppies. We like
our buyers to train their dogs in the Dansk
Retriever Klub, if they are Danish of course. When
the dog has become the right age, we also like them
to participate in Field Trials. Occasionally we do
sell dogs as family dogs only, but you should always
think things thoroughly through before buying a
gundog. These dogs normally demands more training
and handling than a family, just looking for a
family dog, could honour.
When
we choose the buyers we normally ask people to come
and visit us and to see our dogs. Then we usually
ask people to go home and talk about what they have
heard and seen while visiting our kennel. We like
people to know what it takes to own a Field Trial
Golden Retriever, both in terms of mental sparring
but also in terms of fysical training.
We
expect all our Danish puppy buyers to enlist in
Dansk-Retriver-Klub a special club under Dansk
Kennel Klub
As a
buyer of a dog from Kennel Bredekaer you are stuck
with us for many years ahead, and we do like to know
that our buyers get the right start with the puppy.
You will also know where to turn to if problems
occur. We like to get feedback from pur buyers so we
can take things into considoration when planning
future breedings.
